Is this the nearest thing I’ve come to a genuine do-it-all, do-it-anywhere loudspeaker ?

It might just be. It’s certainly my favorite two-way since the original Wilson Duette started standing with its back against the wall.

Other brands might make more noise about (and with) their aluminum boxes, but right now it’s the Stenheims that are delivering the musical goods

I’ve slated several pairs of excellent two-way speakers for review over the next few months,

including models from Joseph Audio, Acora Acoustics and Vimberg.

But the Stenheims go deeper than that. Not only do they provide sublime sound, but they resonate with my life as an audiophile.

They capture all of the qualities I’ve pursued over the last 40 years, and I highly recommend them.

The Alumine Twos’ midrange and treble reproduction was, without question, the finest I’ve ever heard in my room,

providing spot-on tonal accuracy combined with transparency that was second to none—I could hear the recordings so clearly it was uncanny.

Song after song, the solidity of the aural images and their 3D precision placements as they emerged from an empty space in my room consistently left me mesmerized.

Those sounds, so sharply and expertly carved into tall, wide, deep soundstages, were so utterly devoid of even the subtlest cues

that they were emanating from the utilitarian-looking square-ish boxes I knew were reproducing them,

I found the sound of the Twos difficult if not impossible to find fault with.

When I combined these small speakers with my dual subs, I was, without question, in audio heaven because,

they created the best sound I’ve ever heard in my room.

The price the Alumine 2s command will also buy many excellent floor standing full-range speakers.

Unfortunately, none of them have the level of resolution that the Alumine 2s possess.

What the Wilson Audio WATTs did (resolution and soundstaging), they did incredibly well if you had a massive solid-state amplifier that could drive them.

And once you heard what they could do, it was tough to un-hear it.

Which is just how the Stenheims are, with none of the limitations of those early WATTs.

Just under 12 grand for a pair of highly resolving, dynamic monitors that are tube friendly and built like your favorite Swiss watch ?

Sign me up. Perspective is everything.

No disrespect to Magico and YG, but Stenheim is playing at their level without question.

If the concept, and all the benefits that come with a high-performance two-way monitor appeal to you,

Stenheim’s Alumine 2 speakers are fantastic.

Highly recommended.

The speakers communicated the attack components of every note—every bend, slur, slide, and rest stroke—

and Pass’s sense of the dramatic came across as well as I’ve ever heard from a non-horn loudspeaker.

The guitar’s spatial presence, and the reproduction of its unique timbral signature, were also remarkable.

Dumb audio-reviewer cliché though this may be, there were times, while listening to Joe Pass through the Alumines,

that I could have been fooled into thinking I was hearing the real thing.

The Stenheims’ spatial performance was of the sort that may appeal to traditional high-end audio enthusiasts.

The Alumine is one of the most recommendable small speakers I have heard.

This is what sets the Alumine 2 above the competition – and why it should be considered as a serious alternative to the majority of sub-20K floorstanders.

It does the traditional, small-speaker things exceptionally well, but its fundamentally sorted design means that its musical grasp extends to recordings you might think would be well outside its capabilities.

It’s natural sense of scale, the clarity it possess down to the bottom of its range and the ability it has to expand without constraint allow even the largest works to breathe naturally, the most propulsive rock music to hit hard.

It does the small stuff better than the stand-mount competition; it does the big stuff better than any cheap (and all but a very few mid-priced) floorstanders.

It works brilliantly in small spaces and astonishingly well in larger ones.
